The Biological Effects of Ionising
نویسنده
چکیده
SINCE the high incidence of iatrogenic hypothyroidism (40%/. eight years after treatment) in thyrotoxic patients treated with radioiodine was appreciated, the radiobiology of the thyroid gland has 'become a subject of great clinical importance. The method of treatment in its orthodox form and dosage is clearly unsatisfactory and efforts are being made to improve it in various centres. Unfortunately, these efforts are having to take place against a background of inadequate iniformation ajbout fundamental radiobiological mechanisms. It is my intention to review some of the literature relevant to the radiobiology of the thyroid but before doing so I would like to mention some common radiobiological concepts. The events following bombardment of a tissue by ionising radiation are discussed by Bacq and Alexander (1961). When X-rays or y-rays enter a tissue they eject electrons from the atoms by which they are absorbed. These ejected electrons in turn eject electrons from other atoms and are responsible for most of the ionisations which occur. In the case of a-rays, P-rays, protons and neutrons electrons are again ejected with similar consequences.

Identification of the individual radiosensitivity of workers exposed to ionising radiation is crucial for protecting these workers from the adverse health-and-safety effects of radiation. This study aims to test and vet a new cytogenetic biomarker called G2 assay, which assesses individual radiosensitivity of healthcare personnel in medical diagnosis and treatment using ionising radiation. Anot...

It has long been recognized that the degree of biological impact on an organism resulting from a given absorbed dose of ionising radiation can vary depending upon the type of radiation involved. This difference has been experimentally quantified and reported as the “relative biological effectiveness” (RBE) of specific radiation types. RBE values have been measured for a variety of end points in...

Human exposure to ionising radiation disrupts normal metabolic processes in cells and organs by inducing complex biological responses that interfere with gene and protein expression. Conventional dosimetry, monitoring of prodromal symptoms and peripheral lymphocyte counts are of limited value as organand tissue-specific biomarkers for personnel exposed to radiation, particularly, weeks or month...

The controversy over the use of nuclear energy fundamentally comes down to three main considerations: its safety of use, ability of nuclear energy generation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and finally its long term sustainability. The paper addressed the problem of safety in the industrial and medical use of nuclear energy, as it is affected by the design and construction of light and heavy...

An adaptive response is a biological response where the exposure of cells or animals to a low priming exposure induces mechanisms that protect the cells or animals against the detrimental effects of a subsequent larger challenging exposure. In realistic environmental situations, living organisms can be exposed to a mixture of stressors, and the resultant effects due to such exposures are referr...
